Expatriate Remittances in Bangladesh
As of August 28, 2024, Bangladesh's expatriate income surpassed $200 million, underscoring the vital role of remittances in the national economy. However, this achievement came despite significant challenges. From July 19 to July 23, banks were closed due to the quota reform movement. Additionally, broadband internet was down for five days, and mobile internet was disrupted for ten days, causing foreign transactions to nearly halt. Under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, an interim government was formed, gradually restoring normalcy and allowing remittance flows to resume.
