Bangladesh is on track to surpass China in cotton imports for the 2024-25 marketing year (August-July), according to a recent forecast by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). If this projection holds, Bangladesh will reclaim its position as the world's leading cotton importer—a title it has held multiple times before, including in the years surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
The latest USDA report predicts that Bangladesh’s cotton imports will reach 8 million bales by the end of the current marketing year, up from the 7.8 million bales previously estimated in October. This surge is primarily driven by rising demand in the country’s ready-made garment industry. In the previous 2023-24 marketing year, Bangladesh imported 7.575 million bales of cotton. For reference, one bale equals 480 pounds (218 kilograms).
